International Issues
The FCWI is committed to implementing international human rights agreements on gender equality. It monitors the application of the CEDAW Convention, the Istanbul Convention and UN Covenants in Switzerland critically and thoroughly.
Human rights covenants
The UN human rights covenants enforce universally applicable fundamental rights. They oblige countries to prevent discrimination and to promote gender equality. Both covenants have been binding in Switzerland since 1992.
CEDAW Convention
The CEDAW Convention protects women around the world from discrimination. The FCWI oversees its implementation in Switzerland and drafts statements to the CEDAW Committee. Its Practice Guide provides expert knowledge for legal practice.
Istanbul Convention
The Istanbul Convention obliges Switzerland to prevent violence against women and to protect victims. The FCWI is committed to ensuring that the 2022-2026 national action plan is implemented effectively.
